Emily was only four years old when her father was sent away on a military deployment.
Every night before going to sleep, she would ask her mother the same question:
“When is Daddy coming home?”
After months of waiting, one afternoon Emily finally saw him standing in front of their house.
“DADDY!”
Tears of joy filled her eyes as she ran toward him. Her father dropped to his knees and opened his arms, ready to hold his little girl again.
But just before Emily could reach him, a military vehicle suddenly pulled up in front of the house.
An urgent order had arrived. Her father had to leave again.
“Daddy! Please don’t go!” Emily cried as she ran after him.
Before getting into the vehicle, her father turned around one last time. He held Emily tightly in his arms, kissed her forehead, and whispered:
“Don’t cry, sweetheart. I promise I’ll come back.”
Emily stood in front of the house and watched the vehicle disappear down the street.
She believed his promise.
Weeks passed.
Then one morning, Emily found herself standing at a military funeral.
Instead of seeing the father she had been waiting for, there was a closed casket surrounded by flowers and American flags.
Emily slowly walked toward it and placed her tiny hands on the casket.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Daddy… you promised you’d come back…”
She rested her head against the casket and cried, waiting for an answer that would never come.
Sometimes the most painful part of saying goodbye is a promise someone desperately wanted to keep. 💔
